Universality of vortex avalanches in a type II superconductor with periodic pinning

چکیده
In this work the robustness of a simple cellular automaton developed by Bassler and Paczuski[1] to describe the critical state in typeII superconductors is studied. Two different configurations of pinning centers are introduced and a new universality class is found. The numerical values of the critical exponents were calculated following two scaling techniques to ensure the validity of our results.

Numerical calculation of the vortex–columnar-defect interaction and critical currents in extreme type-II superconductors—a two-dimensional model based on the Ginzburg–Landau approximation
We extend our previous one-dimensional Ginzburg–Landau calculations of the pinning energy of vortices to two dimensions, in order to achieve an understanding of the pinning forces exerted on vortices by defects. By minimizing the free energy using a relaxation scheme, we obtain the spatial variation of the order parameter and supercurrents for a vortex in the vicinity of a cylindrical defect in...
متن کاملFlux noise resulting from vortex avalanches using a simple kinetic model
We have carried out a model calculation of the flux noise produced by vortex avalanches in a type-II superconductor, using a simple kinetic model proposed by Bassler and Paczuski. Over a broad range of frequencies, we find that the flux noise SF(v) has a power-law dependence on frequency, SF(v);v , with s;1.4 in reasonable agreement with experiment. In addition, for small lattices, the calculat...
متن کاملPeriodic vortex pinning with magnetic and nonmagnetic dots: The influence of size
Periodic pinning arrays can give rise to commensurability effects for the vortex pinning in superconductors. We studied the influence of size and separation of the individual pinning centers made out of magnetic and nonmagnetic dots. While there is some dependence on the dot size, the periodic pinning changes its character drastically, as soon as the separation between dots becomes comparable t...

A serious obstacle impeding the application of lowand hightemperature superconductor devices is the presence of trapped magnetic flux: flux lines or vortices can be induced by fields as small as the Earth’s magnetic field. Once present, vortices dissipate energy and generate internal noise, limiting the operation of numerous superconducting devices. Methods used to overcome this difficulty incl...
متن کاملMeasurement of the Vortex Pair Interaction Potential in a Type-II Superconductor
We describe the first direct measurement of the pair interaction potential for magnetic flux lines in a Type-II superconductor. Our approach relies on quantitative analysis of Lorentz microscope images of vortices creeping through a superconducting thin film. Time-resolved vortex distributions imaged in this way reflect both the vortices’ mutual interaction and also the influence of random pinn...
